Recycling and Waste Collection

Recycling

Facilities Management coordinates multiple service contracts for recycling on the UBC Okanagan campus. All members of the Okanagan campus community are responsible for collecting recyclable material in their section and taking it to a designated recycling station. Most recycling will be collected from these stations multiple times each week by one of our contractors.

Departments may contact Shred-It if they wish to coordinate one-time or regularly scheduled confidential shredding.

Departments that receive large shipments should please break down boxes, discard packing materials (see Waste Removal Flowchart below), and create an Archibus work request asking our craftspersons to collect the flattened cardboard. Please do not leave large quantities of assembled boxes and packing materials in hallways of academic buildings.

Waste Collection

Facilities Management coordinates the custodial services contract, which includes the emptying of wastebaskets in campus building foyers, hallways and common areas on a daily basis. The disposal of food waste in private offices is discouraged. It is recommended that such waste be disposed of either in compost bins (if applicable), or in central trash areas for hygienic and pest control reasons. Please use the Custodial Request Form if you wish to identify a hallway garbage collection bin that requires emptying.

Facilities Management craftspersons are responsible for the emptying of outdoor trash cans and removal of litter from all campus grounds. Please create an Archibus work request for any outdoor clean-up requests.

If there are any questions or concerns relating to the collection of recyclable material or disposal of waste on campus, please email Jamie Armer (Manager, Custodial & Waste Services) at jamie.armer@ubc.ca.
